Many people are familiar with the natural benefits of cotton – breathable, hypoallergenic and soft. At the same time, many are unable to distinguish the difference between real pure cotton and fake synthetic or chemically derived versions of cotton found in every-day personal care products. These “cotton-like” materials can mislead the average consumer about the effectiveness of their products and sometimes even cause other problems.
We want YOU to experience the real benefits of real cotton and the MAXIMum level of natural protection when it comes to your menstrual, intimate, maternity, incontinence and cosmetic care needs. That’s why we made organic and natural cotton the main ingredient of our products and use the above pictured cotton flower icons as the main identifying symbols of our brand. Each cotton flower icon color represents a specific absorbency level, with blue being the exception for all other items not necessarily associated with an absorbency.
Here’s a little bit more about why using 100% cotton is so important and some of the other key features of the Maxim brand that represent our commitment to good health and sustainability:
Made with 100% Organic and Natural Cotton
Although we came up with our own brand’s cotton flower icon, the symbol to the left is an internationally, well-known trademark symbol by Cotton Incorporated, which certifies the use of cotton as the main ingredient of our products. Using 100% Cotton is so important to us because cotton’s natural breathable quality and structure allows air to flow through its fibers more easily which helps soothe and prevent the risk of irritation, while creating a general softer feel. Watch these videos to learn more about what makes cotton the healthiest fiber for tampons and pads.
Chlorine is a chemical commonly used to bleach, whiten and disinfect raw materials, like cotton, found in every-day products. The chlorine bleaching process has been found to leave behind toxic dioxin (a known carcinogen) residues in the fibers of the finished goods. This is especially troublesome when it comes to tampons because of the highly absorbent nature of the vagina. Women wear tampons anywhere from 4 – 6 hours at a time for 5 – 7 days out of the month, making them more susceptible to the documented negative effects of dioxin exposure. That’s why we use hydrogen peroxide, a safer natural bleaching agent that doesn’t create any dioxin residues. Check out this video for a cool product test that clearly illustrates the importance of this point.
Cotton is hypoallergenic by nature, making it the ideal fiber for relief from rashes and itchiness, which is commonly experienced by those with sensitive skin or the many people who wear pads and liners on a daily basis for bladder control reasons. Cotton-like materials, like plastic, viscose, wood pulp, rayon, and super-absorbents, combined with other irritating materials like fragrances and super-absorbent, found in other products, contribute to creating what’s called a “heat-damp micro-climate” in or on the body, which encourages the growth of bacteria that not only causes irritation, but also feminine odor. Check out this video for a cool product test that can help you distinguish the difference between cotton and cotton-like plastics found in other sanitary pads.
Wood Pulp Free
Wood pulp, also sometimes known as fluff pulp, is made from trees and is the most common ingredient used in the absorbent core of other conventional and natural sanitary pads. Natural forests are being abused and destroyed in the process of obtaining wood pulp. Many women are allergic to wood pulp and the chemicals used to break down trees in to this fiber. Maxim’s sanitary pads’ absorbent cores are made with 100% Natural Cotton instead of wood pulp because cotton is more breathable, hypoallergenic, absorbent, waste efficient and helps save trees. Check out this video for a cool product test that distinguishes the difference between cotton and wood pulp.
Cotton fibers are gentler by nature making it the preferred touch and feel. This is especially true when it comes to tampons, sanitary napkins and incontinence pads because they are being worn for prolonged periods of time and in very heated areas of the body that are prone to sweating. The breathable qualities of cotton allow air to flow more easily creating a fresher and less irritating experience with the actual product. In fact, some women who experience vaginal irritations on a regular basis, especially around the time of their menstrual cycle, might not even be aware that the source of irritation can be coming from the scratch synthetic and plastic materials found in their intimate feminien hygiene products. These women and others find relief in Maxim products after using them for only a short period of time.
Many people are under the impression that if a product is good for your health and the environment, it can’t possibly be as good as leading mainstream synthetic brands. Well, that’s just not true, at least in our case! First off, when it comes to tampons, absorbency levels are regulated by the FDA, so a regular absorbency organic tampon needs to absorb the same levels of liquid as regular absorbency conventional mainstream tampon, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to label and sell them as such. Also, we put extra time and attention in to the design of our products for more comfort, better protection against leaks and fiber shredding.
Cotton is a more easily renewable resource than the non-renewable petroleum based plastic elements and less renewable deforestation practices used to obtain tree based wood pulp fibers, commonly found in other menstrual care products. Cotton is also more biodegradable than the synthetic materials and tampon plastic applicators found in other menstrual care products that take years to decompose, clog up our landfills and pollute our oceans.
We get many inquiries about whether Maxim products are tested on animals or made from animal by-products, which makes sense because if you've found Maxim products, we know that, like us, you care about your health and the environment, in which case, our fellow animal species and friends should get the same respect. So, we're happy to report Maxim products are cruelty free and Peta approved.
