Mothers and menstruation. They are so deeply connected. So are fathers for that matter, as Natalie Berthold, the most amazing family constellation therapist, shared with us not too long ago. We should probably do a follow up post with her about the family constellation connection perspective between moms and menstruation too. In the meantime, we want to pay homage to the most giving beings we know! Moms! They give life through their birth breeding vessels, nourishment via their breasts and unconditional love throughout their lives. That’s why this Mother’s Day and Menstrual Hygiene Day we coordinated with some of our favorite women’s health brands and organizations to offer an amazing initiative and giveaway that’s made to nurture your mother right back and give to women in need!
Last year, in this same spirit of giving, we donated over 280,000 tampons to Period, formerly known as Camions of Care, which benefited over 35,000 women in need. Now it’s your turn! This year we’ve partnered up with our international friends in charge of organizing Menstrual Hygiene Day (coming up on 5/28/17) and many other influencers like The Association of Junior Leagues International and Global Citizen, to inspire people across the globe to organize menstrual product donation drives for women in need. Organizations across the country have signed up to break the taboo around menstruation, with a more specific theme this year that we’ve been addressing since the launch of our Healthy Hygiene Project – how the lack of access to hygiene products leads to girls dropping out of school, which puts them at an unfair disadvantage to succeed in school.
Access to menstrual hygiene products impacts 400 million women in the USA living in poverty. During the week leading up to Menstrual Hygiene Day (MHD), we’re #DrivingMH by calling on communities to organize product collection drives for these women in need.
Be an advocate for smashing the shame around menstruation! Find all the tools and support you may need to organize your own drive here. Your efforts will help make sure all women and menstruators can manage their periods in a dignified and healthy way.
Speaking of smashing the shame, to all of our fellow New Yorkers, make sure to mark your calendars for an esteemed panel discussion and empowering workshop on local and global challenges around menstruation empowerment. The event is on May 25th, 2017 at New York University, 20 Cooper Square, 5th Floor, from 9:00am – 12:00pm and will feature some of our #fiercewoman favorites like Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal, Nadya Okamoto and Nicole Jardim. Please make sure to RSVP here
For all of our D.C. friends and those open to taking a trip up to our nation’s capitol to engage our legislators and others about menstrual health, check out this amazing rally by our partners at Women’s Voices for the Earth. The rally is in conjunction with a bill called The Menstrual Products Right to Know Act of 2017 by Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) which was just introduced to Congress and will require all menstrual care manufacturers to disclose their products’ ingredients, a practice we already abide by and one similar to a call to action we supported years ago with Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney. More to come on that in our next post!
