#FWOTM: Ana Mayer, An Innovator Who Meets Fertility Needs on Our Terms

ana mayer

Ana Mayer is the Co-founder of Ovatemp, a company that provides an easy to use ovulation predictor kit for smart phones. At Maxim, you know we’re always exploring the theme of taking control of our health through a diverse means of empowerment, like using essential oils and realigning chakra energy. Making fierce innovations in the realm of fertility and empowering women to #takecharge of their reproductive health via natural measures is a topic we’re so excited about which is why we’ve chosen Ana as our Fierce Woman of the Month.

Ovatemp has cleverly taken Ovulation Predictor Kits to the next level by allowing you to track fertility on your phone. This new and simple app and device allow women who want to track their cycles, and consequently their fertility levels, to do so in a methodical and insightful way. The phone app makes the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) accessible to all women who could afford a smart phone and the ONDO Bluetooth Basal Thermometer pictured below ($75). The ONDO syncs up with the app in order to help you track your basal body temperature in a hassle free way.

OVATEMP-ONDO-Oral-Basal-Thermometer__41ToelROzKLFor those of you unfamiliar with the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) it was at another point in time referred to as the rhythm method of contraception. Ovatemp’s Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) is programmed into their application using a special algorithm that takes into account various measures of fertility like basal body temperature (the lowest body temperature you can have all day- usually taken in the morning), cervical mucous consistency (discharge comes in different consistencies at different points in your cycle- more viscous and sticky closer to ovulation), and mild cramping (also called mittelschperz which occurs for some women closer to ovulation- charming German words!). In terms of utility, FAM could be used as contraception or as a way to get pregnant (#healthymenstruation).  Before Ovatemp’s innovation, women would chart fertility using charts and special thermometers in order to calculate how fertile they were.

The following stats referenced in a Refinery 29 article featuring Ovatemp are pretty convincing: Using the fertility awareness method is about 98% effective at preventing pregnancy when used perfectly, and 80% effective with typical use. Combined with withdrawal, fertility awareness is 94.6% effective with typical use. This is more effective than typical use of condoms (85%) or the pill (92%).

We had the chance to interview Ana about her interpretation of her own role in the fabric of fierce women from this century… Here’s what she had to say about what’s inspired her to move into this realm of focus:

At Maxim Hygiene, we define a Fierce Woman as a “glorious female creature whose idea of beauty is hinged upon the idea that she can change the world with each choice, each moment and each breath of her life.” Who in your life is a Fierce Woman and why?

I have several fierce women in my life, but undoubtedly the most influential one is my mother. She taught me that there’s more joy in giving to others and helping those in need (friends, family and complete strangers alike) than in anything else. Some times changing the world is not about grand gestures and big projects, it’s about changing small stuff for the people around you. It’s about a small act of kindness that can resonate for a long time. My mother taught me that. I try to practice that in my day to day life including the workspace. With Ovatemp I want to help women in whatever way I can, whether they are struggling with infertility, trying to figure out their cycles or just want to make tracking easier, I want to offer any kind of help I can.

What’s your experience been like going from corporate lawyer to entrepreneur?

It has definitely been a wild ride! Being a lawyer has helped me keep structure and focus, but on the other hand I’ve also had to learn to roll with the punches of the ‘startup life.’ I don’t think I could go back to being just a lawyer though. This has been hard and challenging but I wouldn’t change a thing and if I had the choice I’d do it all over again.

What do you tell women who have major doubts about the efficacy of Ovatemp whether it be for fertility or preventing pregnancy?

I believe that women who doubt the efficacy of the method just need to learn a bit more about how our bodies work [Ana recommends “Taking Charge of Your Fertility” by Toni Weschler] and how Ovatemp can help them keep track. I believe that for Ovatemp or any other app, monitor or tracker to work a woman first has to understand her body. There’s so much power in understanding how it all works. It’s not just about relying on an app or a thermometer, it’s about trusting your body and making the tracking easier with the app and thermometer.

What are the benefits of signing onto Ovatemp’s app?

Ovatemp and the ONDO are available through ovatemp.com and amazon.com The personalized in-app fertility programs are free. You answer a simple questionnaire and get a profile with advice for your specific needs. The program includes tips on diet, lifestyle, stress management and acupressure techniques. It’s an amazing easy way to help you rebalance your hormones and boost your fertile health naturally.

Do you have any stats on the efficacy of Ovatemp and Ondo? That is higher than the pill! How is this not yet a full on replace for the pill?

We currently have no statistics on the efficacy of Ovatemp per se regarding birth control; The statistics mentioned {in your article} are based on studies on the efficacy of the Fertility Awareness Method. Our algorithms are based on this method and we continue to perfect them as we go. We are working on putting pilot programs together and getting numbers on Ovatemp specifically.

The Fertility Awareness Method is in fact way better that the Pill and it has no side effects! In fact, we are experiencing a shift and women are becoming aware of the detrimental side effects that hormonal contraception carries and are now looking for alternatives. At Ovatemp we strive to make this an easy to use method and to help women learn about their bodies and use that information to practice a safer, non-invasive way of contraception.

Finally, there is a company who is meeting our fertility needs on our terms! Gone are the days when a woman would have to collect a compendium of books, whisper amongst friends, and contemplate fertility in isolation.
